UN Secretary-General calls for "calm, restraint" in Honduras
According to a spokesperson for the UN, the Secretary-General is closely monitoring developments and welcomes the calm and orderly manner in which the vote was conducted. However, he has expressed concern over rising tensions while the official announcement of results remains pending.
The statement emphasized: "He urges all actors to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from language or actions that could escalate tensions, and allow electoral institutions to complete their work without interference, addressing electoral disputes through established legal mechanisms." Guterres also stressed "the importance of declaring the official results according to the constitutional timeline and to ensure an orderly transition on 27 January."
The UN highlighted that respecting the sovereign will of the people is critical for maintaining national stability and peace.
Honduras has faced an electoral crisis since November 30, triggered by technical issues with the online reporting platform and alleged breaches in the vote-counting system. Questions over the accuracy and integrity of the results have been raised by both ruling party officials and electoral authorities, citing inconsistencies in the reporting process.
